Day 12-Freiburg, Germany

We took the bus (#55) from Kandern to Basel Bad Bf (45 minutes) and then hopped the train from Basel Bad Bf to Freiburg (45 minutes). All of this is covered under our KONUS card that we received from our Airbnb.

Freiburg was such an amazing day of exploring.

Bächle-They have little streams of water  running on the sides of the streets and most people get little wooden boats and sail them down the stream and of course we had to participate. One popular legend says that if you accidentally step into a Bächle, you will end up marrying someone from Freiburg

The Freiburg cathedral was absolutely stunning and even had the organ playing.  We got a traditional bratwurst for lunch from a food cart and it was so yummy. We had so much fun admiring the beautiful architecture and the amazing cuckoo clocks produced in this region.

What an amazing last full day to top off the journey. So thankful to have Chloe with me to explore with, she has been such a JOY and has proven to be the most amazing world traveler in figuring out our transport.  Taylor and our head back home now and although it’s been an amazing journey, we can’t wait to see the rest of the family ❤️

Old train station in Kandern where we caught our bus

Of course Chloe had to have her pic at the Chloe restaurant

I bought boats for Bradyn and Ellie and we had to play with them in the streams of course.

Beautiful fountains where you can get fresh water to refill your bottles

Freiburg Cathedral

The cathedral was so ornate in every detail and the organ system was unbelievable

Organ pipes in the cathedral

I loved all of the stained glass windows located throughout the cathedral

The beautiful sounds from the organ

These cuckoo clocks are so fun and such detail in each one.

We had to get a traditional sausage/Bratwurst from a food truck

So delicious

Walking the streets with the Bachle running through each of them

Loved this store and how they sold their pasta

Thanks, Germany! You have been amazing

Day 11-Kandern, Germany

Lovely day enjoying Kandern and the numerous hiking trails it offers. Took about an 8km hike to Sausenburg Castle. It was a lovely hike winding through the Black Forest woods and enjoying God’s beautiful creation.

Ignore my out of breath commentary 😂

Day 10-Lucerne, Switzerland

My best friends daughter, Chloe, and I took a day trip to Lucern, Switzerland and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It was a bit of a challenge to get there first by taking a bus and then the trains but we managed and had an amazing day taking it all in. We managed to spend time at the beautiful covered bridges-Chapel Bridge and Sprueyer Bridge-that cross the crystal clear blue waters from Lake Lucerne. We explored the painted city squares-weinmarkt, hirshenplatz, kornmarkt, kapellplatz, sternenplatz-and admired the amazing paintings on the buildings. We hiked up to Musegg Wall and climbed the clock tower and Mannliturm tower to capture beautiful views of the city.

The visit to the Jesuit church was stunning to view its architecture and my first time seeing confessional booths. The iconic Lion Monument also was majestic and beautiful. Seeing the snow capped mountains in the distance was icing on the cake.

This city was soooo beautiful

Our travels back to Kandern proved to be a bit difficult trying to catch a bus to our little town before the buses stopped running. We ended up 5km from Kandern, but had an unintended lovely hike through the Black Forest (thankfully downhill) on our way home and we were so happy to lay our heads on the pillow that night.

5km unintended hike…it’s all part of the adventure

We were so happy to finally make it back to our town.

Day 9-Kandern, Germany

Went for a little hike this morning through the Black Forest and found a monument towering over the city that was constructed pre and post war. I also was privileged to get to help with an activity for Taylor’s conference. I rode to the airport with another missionary and picked up my best friends daughter Chloe who will spend the week with me.

I love the quote ‘I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees’

So many amazing trails from here
